Cubism was one of the most influential movements in Western art this century, Beginning with the revolutionary experiments of Picasso and Braque in Paris between 1906 and 1908, Cubism gathered momentum and soon spread to the rest of Europe and America. Ulysse de James Joyce. Une appréciation
James Joyce's Ulysses - an Appreciation fut publié en 1923, soit l'année suivant la parution d'Ulysse. L article fut accueilli dans la revue Life and Letters publiée par Haldeman-Julius Company. Il ne fut réédité qu'en 1975 en Angleterre par Village Press et il est inédit en français. Ce qui distingue ce texte c'est, tout d'abord, la certitude de Powys de se trouver face à un chef-d'oeuvre, plus encore, face à un classique. Le ton de ce long article nous permet de retrouver la force intellectuelle et lyrique de Powys. Sa singularité de créateur lui rend possible une lecture très précieuse et enthousiaste d'Ulysse. Powys voulait que chacun s'empare de ce chef-d'oeuvre, qu'il ne soit pas le "domaine réservé" de quelques érudits. C'est une lacune, pour les études joyciennes, qu'un tel texte soit peu connu, voire inconnu, car les pertinences de Powys, son ironie devant les critiques, viennent enrichir considérablement la vision de ce classique dont il est l'un des premiers à percevoir l'extrême bienveillance.
