Résumé : L'Architecture transformée se présente comme une enquête détaillée sur la reconversion/réhabilitation de bâtiments anciens, considérée comme un domaine en soi. L'auteur a sélectionné 44 projets qui démontrent à quel point le réemploi est devenu une discipline à part entière - sinon fondamentale - de l'architecture d'aujourd'hui. Il ne s'agit pas tant de conserver et de respecter servilement le passé, nous dit-il, que de transformer ce qu'il nous a légué, de trouver de nouveaux usages à d'anciens bâtiments dans une approche plus concrète qu'historiciste. La transformation d'anciens bâtiments est d'ailleurs devenue le lot commun des architectes partout dans le monde : logique d'un point de vue environnemental, cette méthode est souvent plus simple et plus économique que de tout refaire à neuf. Les projets de réhabilitation ont donné naissance à des réalisations intelligentes et novatrices, où l'on retrouve les plus grands noms de l'architecture actuelle ; Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, Norman Foster, Eric Owen Moss ou Bernard Tschumi, pour ne citer qu'eux. L'ouvrage montre comment les architectes ont abordé des structures historiques pour les restituer à la vie actuelle : la légendaire usine Fiat s'est transformée en complexe culturel et commercial ; un palais espagnol est devenu bibliothèque ; une usine d'armement sert de cadre à un centre pour les arts et les médias. Si certaines structures anciennes ne présentaient pas toujours un grand intérêt en termes historiques ou architecturaux, beaucoup n'en avaient pas moins une histoire passionnante - telle cette cathédrale italienne du XVIe siècle, cette fabrique d'hélices à bateau du XIXe à Hambourg, ou cet ancien quartier général nazi en Autriche.
